What A Wind Mitigation Inspection Actually Checks

A licensed wind mitigation inspector evaluates specific hurricane-resistant features on your home: roof shape (hip roofs generally score better than gable), how the roof deck is attached to the trusses, how the roof structure is tied to the walls, whether a secondary water barrier is present, and what level of opening protection your windows and doors have.

Why Insurers Care About These Specific Features

Each of these features has been shown to measurably reduce wind damage risk in a hurricane, and Florida law requires insurers to offer premium credits for verified mitigation features. The inspection simply documents what’s already true about your home so your insurer can apply the discounts you’ve earned.

How Long The Inspection Takes & How Long It's Valid

A wind mitigation inspection typically takes under an hour and does not require any invasive work — the inspector photographs and documents existing conditions. Most Florida insurers accept the resulting report for up to five years, or until the roof or protected openings change.

When To Schedule One

The ideal time to schedule a wind mitigation inspection is right after a roof replacement or exterior hardening project, since the documentation captures your upgrades at their strongest and maximizes the credits you can claim.

We Can Point You To A Licensed Inspector

Ricketts Construction doesn’t perform wind mitigation inspections ourselves — by design, they must be completed by an independent, licensed inspector for insurers to accept the report. Once we’ve completed hardening or roofing work on your property, we can point you toward a licensed inspector to get it documented.
